06 Jul 2025
The Master of Arts in Literature and Cultural Studies programme (MALCS) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) hosted its inaugural graduate show in June 2025, showcasing the creative achievements of its graduates. Organised in collaboration with the newly established Arts Technology Lab at the Faculty of Arts, this annual event marked a significant milestone for MALCS and served as the first exhibition at this brand-new venue.
The exhibition, themed “(Re)-volution,” featured twenty diverse artworks by 17 MALCS graduates. The artworks spanned poetry, literature, installation art, paintings, videos, and photography, reflecting urban life and cultural landscapes from Hong Kong to global contexts, while also showcasing the student artists’ creative reflection of the essence of identity and space.
Highlighted art pieces included the documentary The Flower Code (Liu Zitong, Luo Shudan, Yu Dairui, Wong Hio Iong Alexis), which explores the endangered “Hua Ma” Chinese character counting system; F.R.I.E.N.D.S.: Ending Re-imagined (Christan Chow), paying tribute to the classic American TV series by creating derivative work; True Masculinity (Siu Ka Chun Jack), which exhibits a styling project to examine how clothing shapes men’s bodies and identities. The artworks addressed contemporary social issues such as identity, gender, modernity, and globalization, exemplifying MALCS’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches, critical analysis, and innovative perspectives that encourage creative and forward-thinking exploration in teaching and learning.
The opening ceremony brought together members of the Faculty of Arts, MALCS students and alumni, and representatives from the arts and cultural sectors. Distinguished guests, including Professor David Pomfret, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor John Wong, Associate Dean (Undergraduate) of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Nicole Huang, Director of MALCS, Dr. Winnie Yee, MALCS Programme Coordinator and Mr. Fredie Chan, Graduate Show Coordinator, officiated the four-day celebration dedicated to arts and culture. In addition to HKU members, the offer of guided tours attracted a diverse array of external visitors, including scholars and students from various tertiary institutions, representatives from local art organisations, secondary school educators and students, as well as members of the general public.
